Shillong – Travel attractions in the capital city of Meghalaya

8 min read

I was longing for an opportunity to visit Shillong and got lucky during the month of April last year.  My paternal aunt and her son Abhi also joined us for this trip, which was originally planned to fulfill my mother’s wish.

The capital city of Meghalaya is a hilly tourist attraction in north east India. Shillong rises to a height of 1496 m from the sea level. The state of Meghalaya was created during the year 1974. Prior to the creation of Meghalaya, Shillong used to be the capital city of Assam.

Our visit to Shillong, the Capital of Meghalaya

For reaching Shillong from Thiruvanthapuram, we needed to cover a distance of 1251 kms from Kolkata. We took a flight to Guwahati, which is closer to Shillong. We took a pre-booked car from the airport. You may even choose to board any deluxe or ordinary bus in Meghalaya.

Accommodation in Shillong

We found the Shillong hotels and accommodation facilities to be in line with our preferences. You’ll achieve your desired comfort level even when you don’t opt for the more luxurious rooms.
Sightseeing Tours in Shillong:
Shillong Peak Travel

Travelling to a distance of 10 km from the city brought us to this picnic spot, which stands at a heignt of 1965 m from the sea level. Catching a panoramic view of this country side is worth cherishing for years. During the spring months, you may visit the summit of the peak. You may stand witness to Obeisance, which is offered to U Shulong inside the sanctum sanctorum. We were truly delighted to observe the star-studded abyss created by the row of city lights.

Cherrapunjee (Sohra)

From Shillong, we needed to drive up a distance of 56 kms for reaching Cherrapunjee, which stands at an altitude of 1,300 from the sea level. The greenery of Meghalaya Mountains and pine forests sets the backdrop of waterfalls and beautiful lakes that constitute the main attractions of Shillong tourism.

For all Shillong tourists, driving to the famous Nohsngithiang falls is a must besides watching the water falls roaring while falling into the deep gorges. On our way to Cherrapunjee, we came across the Presbyterian Church.

Sohpetbneng Peak

Multiple tour packages have been designed to cover the Sohpetbneng peak, which is about 20 km away from Shillong and rises to an altitude of 1,343 m. Members of the Hynniewtrep group consider this hill as sacred. The sacred forest has much to extend the scenic view of this place. My aunt seemed to have attained considerable peace and solace while visiting this place.

Lady Hydari Park

The park offers a mini zoo, which draws the little visitors in large numbers. The Crinoline Falls stands to catch your attention within close vicinity.

Ward’s Lake

The boating option and the garden walks compelled tour planner to include this place in their list.

Umiam Lake Tour

The lake tour showed us through a distance of 17 kms for reaching Umiam Khwan (Barapani). The water scooter and skies seemed to provide breath-taking joy of water sports besides sailing. We were joined by families staying near the Lum Nehru Park.

Botanical Garden

Amid numerous exotic plants, the Botanical Garden seems to offer a captivating place beneath the Ward’s Lake.

Beadon and Bishop Falls
Both Falls reach a deep valley as their water dissolves within misty sparks. Abhi didn’t miss his turn to take a few quick snaps over here.

State Museum

The heritage and lifestyle of this place can be observed while you’re visiting the Museum within the State Central Library complex.

Cathedral of Mary Help of Christian
We came across devotees visiting this place in large numbers at Laitumkhrah.

Elephant Falls
The outskirts of Shillong showed us through the Elephant Falls standing at a distance of 12 kms. The rock dells covered with fern accommodates two falls created from the descending mountain stream.

Shillong is certainly an ideal holiday destination throughout the year. An amiable ambience is created by the combination of climate, people and places in Shillong. The British rulers in India used to describe Shillong as the Scotland of the East as the place still retains much of its old charm. I had witnessed the beauty of nature as I took a tour of this popular hill station. May be it’s your turn now!
