I have recently been to Darjeeling with my family and I must say I felt so rejuvenated with the natural beauty, away from the daily hustle and bustle of the city. We went for a 5 days trip and I enjoyed each and every moment and came back with lots of happy memories. It’s a perfect holiday destination for anyone who loves nature and adventure. One can spend quality time with their loved one may it be a family outing or a fun trip with a group of friends or honeymoon for couples, the place has all for everyone. Let me describe you my journey in more depth.
Best time to visit:
Darjeeling is a hill station, it usually has cool atmosphere throughout the year but during winters it reaches almost 2-5 degree which is extremely cold, so the best time to visit Darjeeling during winters is (October to March) and for the people who cannot handle so much of cold and are looking for a pleasant cool atmosphere can visit Darjeeling during summers as the temperature is around 20-25 degree, the best time to visit is (April-June)
How to reach:
I reside in Kolkata so we went by train till Siliguri and then took a taxi till Darjeeling which is almost 63 kilometers as there is no direct train to Darjeeling. The nearest airport to Darjeeling is Bagdogra which is approximately 95 km away from the city, it takes almost 3 hours to reach Darjeeling from the airport.
Where to stay:
We had stayed at a good hotel which is located on the Mall road which is the prime location of Darjeeling. I will definitely suggest this place as it was a pleasant stay, their service, food, rooms everything was just perfect and this made our trip more memorable. There are many options when it comes to hotels and homestays, one can simply book online from the various website available. I would definitely suggest you to choose hotels to stay nearby the mall road as it is a huge shopping destination which is always crowdy and has many shops nearby, especially medical stores which will be more convenient.
Places to visit:
Darjeeling Himalayan Railway:
The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway also referred to as the DHR, and lovingly called the ‘Darjeeling Toy Train’, is a 2 feet narrow gauge train that runs between New Jalpaiguri and Darjeeling, in West Bengal, India. A journey in the Darjeeling Toy Train has amazing sights with pleasing mountain views and pass by villages and local shops on the way, if you are visiting with your family then please take your kids here as they will love it.
Lepchajagat is a small village only 19kms away from Darjeeling hill town. Although it’s quite close to Darjeeling’s main hub and takes only about 45 minutes by taxi, it has a world of its own. If you are a nature lover or looking for a romantic stay for a couple of days, then Lepchajagat is the place for you. It’s a dense forest area that is combined with magnificent views of Kanchenjunga peaks, wonderful birdlife and serene. Some of the nearest places which are truly worth visiting are Jorphokri, Mirik, and Manebhanjan.
The word Tinchuley means Three Ovens (i.e. Tin Chullahs). And such name to the village has been given because of the three prominent hilltops that surround the place and which from far look like ovens or chullahs. Tinchuley faces the Kalimpong hills. If you love nature, the lovely views of the Himalayan range, like to see the meandering Teesta flow through the mountain landscapes, enjoy tea gardens, orange orchards, want to walk along village trails, watch varieties of birds, experience local culture, people and food, then this is the right place for you.
River Rafting in Teesta:
If you are looking for some adventure, water Rafting in the River Teesta is one of the most exciting things to do in Darjeeling a favorite among the adventure junkees, However, the difficult rapids are only allowed to the professionals or the seasonal trainers as it is risky. You should definitely try this activity when in Darjeeling.
This is not it, I am sure there are definitely many more places in Darjeeling, this were the places I personally visited. Hope this helps you if you are planning to go to Darjeeling. I assure you will be having the best time of your life with an amazing journey worth remembering for a lifetime.
